The study makes an economic comparison between two competing processes for the manufacture of large spinel plates suitable for transparent armor. The study is based on actual and estimated cost data applied to the state of the art processes practiced by Technology Assessment & Transfer (TA&T) to manufacture transparent spinel components. Cost-related factors under consideration include materials, labor, product yields, and amortization of capital equipment. A most significant difference between the two processes is that in hot pressing, all of the sintering shrinkage occurs through the thickness and under conditions of plasticity; whereas in sintering, the shrinkage occurs in three dimensions and much of it under non-plastic conditions. Hot pressing inherently has higher product yields due to reduced cracking and warping of the plates. Hot pressing is TA&T's preferred manufacturing method for large, transparent spinel armor windows for economic reasons and also for overarching reasons of feasibility when very large windows are considered.
