This article aims at looking energy management options for Indian transport sector: After a brief review of Indian transport sector, energy consumption in railways and road sector is worked out showing that Indian railways consume very little fuel to carry a good share of passenger and freight traffic. This only shows that railways should be allocated much larger investment as compared to roadways. Detailed calculations are made for comparing efficienies of different modes of transport. It is clearly shown that public transport is much more efficient than private transport. Railways naturally turn out of be much more efficient than roadways. Calculations are also made for carbon dioxide emissions for different transport modes. Electric vehicles turn out to be much more efficient in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions, even after taking power station efficiency into account. New technologies of transport like electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles are reviewed. It is shown that India should move to coal/renewable resource based electric transport system, away from liquid fuels. We must avoid personal car based transport. Aviation also should be used only for special purposes. For urban transport, bus rapid transit system (BRTS), and NMT (Non-Motorised Transport) like cycling, walking, cycle rickshaws are the proper solution. For rural transport, draught animals must play an important role. They are also required for sustainable agriculture system. Bio-fuels have very limited role in India due to limited land availability and priority for food.
