This paper outlines the development of a portable vehicle controller which can be installed in any passenger car or light truck in about an hour, without damage or permanent modification to the vehicle. This controller is quickly tuned to the characteristics of a given vehicle, and able to perform a wide range of open- or closed-loop dynamic tests. The portable controller proposed here contains the actuators, sensors, and low-level servocontrollers allowing developers to readily implement their lateral and/or longitudinal control algorithms (or other vehicle control-related technique) on any passenger car or light truck with an automatic transmission. Full details of the development and testing of the Automated Test Driver are available in [Mikesell, D.R.: Portable Automated Test Driver for Universal Road Vehicle Dynamics Testing, Ph.D. thesis, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio (2008)].
