Electrical distribution systems with dual voltage levels become more and more frequent in automotive applications. The electrical energy supply limitation in conventional single 12 V electrical systems and the possibility to recuperate mechanical energy for reduction of fuel consumption and emissions make hybrid electrical distribution systems even more necessary in the future. The required high electrical outputs in hybrid electric vehicles demand a safety strategy for the high-voltage distribution system. Alcoa developed a safety concept for the electrical system that ensures complete control and maximum protection for micro-, mild-, full hybrids and electric vehicles. The new system, for which a patent is pending, consists of a special-purpose wire with integrated sensor and connecting elements, an electronic detection unit and, optionally a cut-off device which switches off the high-voltage supply. This new system design detects faults in the high-voltage wiring and allows the rapid cut-off of the high-voltage supply in critical situations (e.g. accidents, careless repair attempts by the vehicle owner etc.) so that no electrical arcs can form and thermal events are effectively prevented.
