The conceivable development of information technology will enable mechatronic systems with inherent partial intelligence. We call this kind of systems selfoptimizing. Self-optimizing systems are able to react autonomously and flexible to changing environmental conditions. They are capable of learning and optimizing their behavior at run-time. The design of such systems requires an intensive communication and cooperation between the involved engineers of the technical domains. Here the development of a domain-spanning principle solution is crucially; the principle solution describes the fundamental structure and the mode of action of the system. The principle solution is developed in the early design phase 'conceptual design'. This paper presents the proceeding during the conceptual design and describes exemplary the synthesis of the principle solution; the description is exemplified by a self-optimizing air gap adjustment system of a linear drive which is used as a propulsion system of an autonomously railway-shuttle. The air gap adjustment system increases the efficiency of the linear drive. The control affords the minimization of the air gap depending on the crossed track.
