This paper proposes a distributed modular architecture with functions that have tasks and messages requirements for the vehicle. All main functions and the main x-by-wire functions e.g. steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire and throttle-by-wire, with definition of fault modes in the distributed architecture are presented. The x-by-wire application domain uses replication of components to detect a fault domain and applies redundancy to achieve continued service in the presence of faults to achieve fault-tolerance. As an example the use of FTT-CAN protocol (Flexible-Time-Triggered-CAN protocol) as a bus communication is shown because it is able to support safety critical systems. This proposal is open to use other safety critical protocols as: FlexRay, TT-CAN, ByteFligth and TTP/C.
