The paper presents the state of art of the realization of a new ultra-lightweight propulsion unit designed for propelling light aircrafts. The unit concept is based on so called cold jet propulsion principle with a thrust of the unit produced by a ducted fan driven by a high speed high power piston engine. The low weight of the system is assured by a dominant use of composite materials. The aerodynamic design of the propulsion system was optimized to provide high efficiency and required distribution of flow parameters. Special attention was paid to solve problems of the engine installation, its cooling and also of the complex dynamic behavior of the fan drive system.
