In order to develop an automation system to increase the hull-forming productivity in shipyard, it is required to identify the line heating parameters. To realize this procedure, the inverse problem should be solved first and the effect of the curved shape formed by flame heat at the heating paths should be investigated for plate forming. In the present study, the inverse problem was solved by using the relationship between bending angle and radius of curvature of the curved shape. Algorithms for solving the inverse problem of plate forming was developed and applied to the 2D plate forming by flame heating. The relation between forming angle and radius of curvature at each forming point was investigated so that the geometrical errors from the effect of the curvature could be minimized. Two methods considering the curvature bending were developed on the basis of laser forming algorithms. The algorithms to determine the forming points and angles considering curvature bending were not time consuming and gave a good performance. By using the linear relationship between the bending angle and the line energy, process control parameters were determined and experiments of 2D forming were performed. The results of the formed shape showed a good agreement with the target shape. To get a more precise forming result, however, feedback control needs to be explored further as well as the edge effect control.
