Hot sheet metal forming is one of the most innovative technologies for automotive industry. Hot stamping of modern manganese-boron-alloyed steel meets both the requirements of innovative body-in-white concepts with respect to functional aspects as well as of lightweight design. In addition to hot formed sheet metal components consisting of one single material, the latest developments at Audi also allow to apply tailor welded blanks for hot stamped parts. Potential application areas, the most essential steps of the technology development as well as a process evaluation are given by the example of the latest middle class car. In this context, particular emphasis is turned on the selection of materials, the transformation of grain structure and mechanical properties during the heat treatment and on the functional requirements of the applied steel sheet surface coating. Furthermore, practical experience in the field of hot stamping are introduced in order to encourage research institutes, material producers and component suppliers to continue the development of this innovative technology. Therefore, essential tasks for a further development of hot sheet metal forming in terms of additional application areas, a further process optimisation and an increasing economic efficiency are described.
