Within the national cooperation project 'New unconventional high-performance technologies for joining in prefabrication, assembly and outfitting in shipbuilding' examinations have been done for laser cutting and laser hybrid welding of thicker sheets in position PC (horizontal on a vertikal wall) with a high powerfibre laser. Based on the results from the process development trials a mechanised, rail guided equipment rack (tractor) has been designed, manufactured and tested. The equipment allows cutting and welding with the laser beam without assembly and disassembly of optical components. The aim of the work is to lay the technical basis for the use of high power solid state lasers in block and dock assembly in shipbuilding. The laser cutting and the subsequent laser-based joining out-of-position with mobile mechanised equipment racks is in principle suitable for appropriate applications. The decrease of production time and the reduction of additional material and heat input are possible with a simultaneous increase of welding quality. Among the established stationary applications of laser technologies at European shipyards mobile laser systems will find their way into the shipbuilding. Thus the part of laser-based processing tasks in hull fabrication will more and more increase. The testing phase under real shipyard conditions is running. Crucial evidences for the further proceeding to implement the new technology into the shipyard process will arise from the practical testing. At this stage it can be ascertained that information and qualification of the responsible and the acting stuff are of prime importance.
