There is a worldwide drive to save energy and to reduce CO2 emissions. In the automotive sector the EU has set a target of a fleet average maximum emission of CO2 of 130 g/km in 2012 for each OEM. To achieve this target, there are different technology options available covering the power train, aerodynamics, rolling resistance and weight reduction. The SuperLight-Car project (SLC) is focused on this last issue and has set a target on reducing the weight of the structure of a typical automobile by at least 30 %.
