One of the biggest challenges in reliability analyses for products in field use, is a complete and significant data basis, with which one can cover and describe the complete product lifetime. Today, this data basis, in regards to the demanded and needed information, is not given. In the development phase a product much more data of control units is collected and documented, compared to the amount in general customer field usage (e.g. CAN signals). Thus, the quality and quantity of the data, which could be used for reliability prognosis, is dramatically reduced and the good information basis, which is given in the testing phase during the development by the numerous amounts of signals and measured values, is limited. In order to improve this situation, an approach was developed, with which the collection of reliability relevant data during costumer usage is enabled and improved. The aim of this reliability orientated approach is the consideration of already given or collected CAN signals for those prognosis. A further benefit of the data collection, apart from the planned reliability analyses, is the further application of those information in the development, testing and service departments for improving their processes.
