A new evaluation procedure based on the VPG (virtual proving ground) method and explicit finite element method was presented in this paper. All analysis or virtual tests were performed to evaluate the road-induced noise. Several conclusions can be drawn as follows: (1) from basic virtual tests, the peaks of SPL (sound pressure level) were obtained to find the basic targets, and vehicle's speed is one of the critical factors to road-induced noise; (2) the result of ODS (operating deflection shape) analysis shows the absolute deformation of key points of vehicle which has great influence on noise property of vehicle; (3) based on the result of modal analysis, the inherent properties of the car body and the acoustic cavity were revealed clearly; (4) comparing the results above, the peak frequencies of sound pressure coincides with the main modal frequencies, which proves that road-induced noise is mainly influenced by the resonance of the car structure and the acoustic cavity; (5) from measurements of IPI (input point inertance) and NTF (noise transfer function) at chassis-body connection points, low local stiffness and high noise sensitivity mounts were recognised to determine the targets to improve the vehicle structure properties; (6) based on IPI and NTF, TPA (transfer path analysis) was performed to identify the path with largest contribution to interior noise. In conclusion, a systematic evaluation procedure based on the VPG technique was put forward and was applied to a mid-size commercial vehicle.
