The Model Based Design approach established at John Deere was demonstrated in this paper. It allows defining advanced functional characteristics using continuous-time and discrete-time building blocks. These built models along with some simulation tools can lead to rapid prototyping, software testing and verification. Not only is the testing and verification process enhanced, but also hardware-in-the-loop simulation can be used to perform testing of dynamic effects on the system quickly and efficiently. With Model Based Design errors can be located and corrected early in system design, where the time and financial impact of system modification is minimized. Design re-use is facilitated if the models are built up in a modular way, both for system upgrading and for developing derivative systems with expanded capabilities. Model Based Design provides virtual prototypes, serving as a platform for collecting system knowledge and supporting communication and system verification between different development groups. An ongoing improvement of the tool chain to enable multi-domain simulation with appropriate interfaces to controller software can be observed. However, to open this simulation environment to more people involved in the design process and to utilize its full potential, improved usability of the software tools is required in the future.
