Operational need evolution and technological breakthroughs will lead to no longer consider antennas as a single well defined unit, but as array of antennas whose natural radiating pattern cannot be controlled by construction but needs compensation techniques to refect the spurious signals (jammers, ground echoes etc.). these techniques include either to evaluate the deformations with mechanical sensors and to correct the phase of signals prior to the beamformer or to use the incoming signals to optimize the cancellation of interferences while preserving the useful signals (autofocus, auto calibration). The Space Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) which mixes the angular processing and the range/Doppler processing can adapt the antenna pattern for each range/Doppler cell and be the solution to overcome the sidelobe issues in non-standard antennas.
