Multidisciplinary holistic optimization is a relevant way to deal with high demands, short duration, and high quality within the product development process. As far as vehicle development is multi layered (domains, process chains, multi physics, distributed locations etc.), highly complex systems within the development environment have to support engineers who have to carry out optimization tasks. Complexity management is required to provide the right data and the right connectivity. Semantic net will be the right method to reach that goal. It has to provide this data via Engineering Data Backbone. Many steps during the optimization process have to be at a high level of automation to enable the engineer to take into account any parameter variation. But also the right way of setting up input data is important - as the consequent parameterization of the geometry for topology and topography optimization. To get reasonable response time and moderate CPU costs surrogate models have to be derived focusing on the specific topic. Providing a strong and efficient support through a highly intelligent and intuitive environment does not mean to put the CAE engineer out of work. The required development cockpit helps to carry out complex tasks by letting the engineer concentrate on creative topics and decisions. For holistic optimization within entire vehicle development efficient mathematical algorithms play an important role, but they are only one aspect of the global task. Data management, complexity handling and know how based environment are additional and essential needs for a high quality approach. The paper describes the concept for a user-friendly development environment to enable the engineer to handle a holistic optimization task within entire vehicle development. The concept is the orientation base for future research projects on multi-disciplinary concept framework and optimization at the Virtual Vehicle Centre of Competence in Graz.
