This paper highlights the role silicone adhesives and sealing materials play in the assembly of automotive exterior lighting components, specifically head and fog lamps. The key basic properties of silicones such as adhesion, and resistance to heat and humidity are discussed, as well as silicone adhesives to minimize fogging in lamps which operate at high temperature. Recent developments of new silicone reactive hot melt adhesives are also covered. The various applications for silicones in the assembly of LED units for auto lamps are also reviewed, with focus on their stress relief, heat dissipation, and light transmittance characteristics which are important in these applications.
