In an ongoing research project, environmental effects from disc brakes in urban traffic are being studied. During braking, there is wear to both the rotor and the pads. This wear process generates particles, which may become airborne. The overall purpose of the project is to evaluate the possibilities to decrease the number of airborne wear particles. A problem with measuring airborne brake particles in field tests is to distinguish them from the background noise. Therefore, a laboratory test stand has been designed which allows controlling of the cleanliness of the surrounding air. In this test stand, a brake corner assembly is mounted in a sealed chamber. A braking load is applied by a hydraulic system and the rotor is driven by an electric motor. In the chamber, the number and size of the airborne wear particles from the pad to rotor contact is measured online. The experimental setup has been verified by a first test series.
