This paper presents a simple and efficient vehicle powertrain model suitable for vehicle ride simulation. This model accounts for powertrain torsional dynamics and engine-block rigid-body dynamics. Both the physics-based and the modal analysis approach for modelling an engine-block equipped with a roll restrictor were presented. The powertrain model was coupled with other vehicle sub-models to form a comprehensive vehicle model, namely, the 16-DOF model. The model also incorporates an ETM that accurately represents tyre enveloping behaviour. Three case studies were presented using this comprehensive powertrain-vehicle model. The straight ahead acceleration performance of the model compared favourably to experimental results for the two throttle settings examined. This model confirmed the expectation that the engine block rigid-body dynamics influence significantly the vehicle ride responses. A single bump event was simulated. The simulation results showed that, from a ride perspective, the acceleration response in the vehicle model with compliant engine mounts were significantly different from that of the vehicle model with complete rigid mounts. A throttle tip-in event was also simulated and the acceleration response showed evidence of the powertrain's contribution. The model described in this paper has the potential to be a powerful tool for vehicle design and development. Potential applications include ride comfort simulation and engine mounting system design. For example, the ride performance for a targeted mounting system performance, e.g., engine natural frequencies and modes, can be evaluated. Also since the model can execute in real-time on a high speed computer, it can also be used in HIL and driver-in-loop simulations.
