Leaf spring is widely used in suspension of modern vehicle. Due to the nonlinear dynamic features of the leaf spring, it is difficult to evaluate the influence of leaf spring suspension on the ride comfort performance of the vehicle. Therefore, in this research, the software ADAMS is applied to establish the multi-body dynamic model of the suspension, and simulation on ride comfort analysis is carried out based on this model. In addition, road roughness is also essential to simulation of the ride comfort analysis, and the reconstruction of road roughness is discussed in this research as well. Based on these works, parameters of the suspension are optimised to improve ride comfort performance of the vehicle, and the method is verified with experiments. And the followings can be concluded: Leaf spring is a complex nonlinear dynamic system, and it is difficult to analyse the ride comfort performance of the vehicle with leaf spring suspension with traditional analytical method. Yet simulation based on multi-body dynamics is an effective alternative. Although there are some shortcomings in the presented method, such as lack of consideration of the vibration of the powertrain and body structures, it provides a method for suspension optimisation to improve the ride comfort performance of the vehicle. The presented method focuses on optimisation of the suspension parameters based on improvement of ride comfort, but it also provides reference for optimisation of other complex mechanical systems, and for analysis of other performance such as handling stability (Andersson and Eriksson, 2004). Since the presented optimisation is performed on constant speed, there are differences between optimised results for different speeds. Further research on the optimisation across the range of speed is needed, which would be carried out in the future.
