To provide acoustic comfort for small cars, customers expectations must be analysed with care. The evaluations of the performances must be done both in standard conditions to get repeatability and accuracy and in driving conditions to get representative and realism. Diesel engines introduce combustion noise especially at idle, which must be as close as possible with gasoline engine noise. Comprehensive analysis gives some key points to reduce the demerits of combustion noise and an increase of the insulation package reduces the level. At the end, small cars equipped with diesel engine can provide a good acoustic performance that can satisfy customers because it increases the value and the image of his car.
