All the major car-makers are developing, even through limited series productions, a new class of vehicles named Micro Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV). Such a class of vehicles originates from more traditional vehicle architectures. However, it is characterized by a lower rate of hybridization, but which is adequate to assure significant improvements in fuel consumption and emissions reduction with specific reference to inner-city transportation. The MHEV class is provided with an on-board Starter/Alternator, needed to accomplish both the functions of Stop/Start of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and of Regenerative Braking during vehicle decelerations. The proposed 12V IESS (Integrated Energy Storage System) fulfills power-energy requirements proper of vehicles being equipped with Starter/Alternator systems which provide ICE Stop/Start functions and regenerative braking during vehicle decelerations. Experiments have been carried out both in the laboratory and on-board the vehicle, system currents and voltages have been monitored and the efficiency has been estimated. Improvements in efficiency, reliability and operating life of the starter battery are achieved by means of the good dynamic characteristics of the UCs (Ultracapacitors) module as well by the inclusion of the power inductor in the IESS configuration. The very low values for the inner resistance together with the long cyclic life of the UCs module assure efficiency and reliability improvements for the whole Starter/Alternator System.
