In the shipbuilding industry the allocation of available space and consideration of operating experience are critical production factors. 3D visualisation offers rich possibilities for evaluation of spatial problems and intelligible illustration of simulated problems. Simulation tools used to analyse the feasibility of assembly operations do not fully support the desired features for its use. The 3D visualisation can e.g. be deployed to support interdisciplinary planning reviews or to visually support validation of complex simulation models. This paper covers the development of an interlink between simulation and Virtual Reality. The usage of 3D visualisation within the simulation tools is very restricted as shown in this paper. Excellent 3D visualisation is provided by Virtual Reality offering in addition a wide variety of features like immersion and collision detection.
