While control strategies of powertrains equipped with ratio controlled continuously variable transmissions (RC/CVT), such as the pulley/belt variator, have been covered in various publications, much research remains to be done toward the torque controlled CVT (TC/CVT), such as the full toroidal variator. This paper introduces the basis for the engine speed control of powertrains equipped with a TC/CVT. Input-output (I-O) feedback linearization is applied as it fulfills all control objectives of CVT-based powertrains, while minimizing the amount of controller gain points. Firstly, a model of the TC/CVT powertrain is developed and compared to that of the RC/CVT powertrain. Secondly, the Torque Control Strategy is presented. Thirdly, the performance obtained is discussed with simulation results.
