With the environmental impact of the automobile increasingly under the spotlight automakers are constantly searching from new ways to improve the green-credentials of their products. Based on the commercial success of its environmentally-friendly acoustic materials with major auto makers, Polymer Group, Inc. (PGI) is expanding the use of these substrates to other vehicle components. Designed to silence interior vehicle noise, the company's Silonyx materials are currently being used in production vehicles by General Motors, Ford and Honda, including North America's best selling Chevy Malibu as well as the Ford Focus and Honda Civic models. Dow Automotive has introduced innovative natural oil-based polyols made with Renuva Resource Technology, which uses up to 60 % fewer fossil fuel resources than conventional polyol technology and produces no net greenhouse emissions. The soybean oil-based polyols can be used to produce automotive applications including armrests, headrests, seating and instrument panels as well as NVH foams. Renuva from Dow is an advanced technology that produces polyurethanes from natural oils. IMPAXX energy absorbing foam, another Dow Automotive product, has been specified by North American race series NASCAR as the exclusive impact protection solution for their 'Car of Tomorrow'. It is placed between the roll cage door bars and door panels for improved driver safety. Fully synthetic nonwovens and melt-blowns based on Celanex PBT in multi-layer filter media (composite filter papers) are providing enhanced reliability and help to protect modern automobile engines from organic and inorganic fuel contaminants. BASF has added two new hydrolysis-resistant polyamides (PA 66) to its product range. These plastic grades are called Ultramid A3WG6 HRX and A3WG7 HRX and are reinforced with 30 % and 35 % glass fibres, respectively. The products were developed for applications in the coolant circuit of vehicles. These new plastics lend themselves for more than just radiator end caps and various connectors. In fact, the variant reinforced with 35 % glass fibre, Ultramid A3WG7 HRX, can also be used to manufacture oil filter modules having integrated coolant pipes. Today, such components also need to be resistant to hot water and glycol.
