Conceptual design is the first phase of the design process. This paper presents a new approach to producing creative designs during the conceptual design phase. The approach employs a knowledge base comprising rules that implement a Behaviour-Entity-Constraint (BEC) representation of modified TRIZ inventive principles. There is a variety of techniques to help people to generate new design ideas, such as Morphological Analysis, Brainstorming, Lateral Thinking, Attribute Listing, Checklisting, Synectics etc. This large collection of techniques can be classified into two groups: disciplined thinking and 'out-of-the box' or divergent thinking. TRIZ, the acronym for 'Theory of Inventive Problem Solving', in Russian, integrates the advantages of disciplined and divergent thinking. The BEC representation enables the generation of innovative solutions based on TRIZ knowledge. The paper has proposed a TRIZ-based approach to retrieve inventive principles as solutions to an actual design problem. The TRIZ Contradiction Matrix (CM) and inventive principles are used to develop a concept generation approach by adding constraints to the standard Behaviour-Entity representation of TRIZ. The proposed method has been applied to support an aircraft cabin layout design. Case studies are described to show the advantages of the proposed method.
