This paper deals with the development of pressure control valves for automotive applications. Here, the requirements on functionality (accuracy and dynamics of the pressure feedback loop), efficiency (fuel consumption) and costs are of special interest. In order to fulfil these requirements, the pressure control valve has to be designed in conjunction with the system. Therefore, two active assistance systems, the closed-center power steering system and the roll stabilization system are presented. Based on this a generalized system is developed which is used as the basis for a detailed analysis. The result of this is a better understanding of the hydraulically implemented control loop. This finally simplifies the determination of the relevant system parameters. The paper is organized as follows: At first we will introduce two active assistance systems, the closed center power steering system and the roll stabilization system with the main focus on the hydraulic system, especially the hydraulic actuators. Based on these applications the requirements on the actuators and valves are described. In order to systematically design the actuators and valves a mathematical model is then derived in Section. Afterwards this mathematical model will be analyzed in detail in order to extract the system relevant parameters. The relevance of these parameters is considered by means of simulations and measurements. Finally the results of the paper will be summarized.
