In contrast to electromechanical systems, hydraulic systems in automotive applications have a problematic reputation in terms of efficiency. Hence, a trend to exchange hydraulics with electromechanical systems can be observed for several years now. This development can be exemplified by the market of steering systems. This paper shows an overview of hydraulic applications in today's passenger cars. Regarding certain fields of application in suspension systems, transmissions and convertible top drives the pros and cons of hydraulic systems are discussed. Furthermore the hydraulic concepts are compared to electromechanical drives recently competing on the market. Finally the crucial criteria for competitiveness of future automotive hydraulic systems are summed up. A continuous improvement of already existing concepts will not be successful if crucial criteria are not completely fulfilled. In particular, the requirements on CO2 emissions, functional integration and number of varieties have to be fulfilled by future hydraulic applications. Hydraulic systems can completely meet the requirements described above. As an example, shows a power steering system consisting of a simple hydraulic cylinder driven by a power pack which is capable for reversible operation. This system became possible by continuous improvement of the electrical drives used in the power pack. Because of its dynamical capabilities the conventional steering valve could be taken away and the drivers feedback is controlled directly by the power pack. Thus, the functional integration into several vehicles can be achieved only by software application. Furthermore this system can be delivered in a completely assembled condition and because of the flexibility of the hose lines it may be applicable in many vehicles only by varying the hose lines. Finally this concepts promises an average power demand of electromechanical systems, meaning close to zero.
