The ability of CPs (conducting polymers) to act as anticorrosive additive of marine paints has been examined and analysed. Results indicate that organic coatings modified by the addition of a low concentration of CP impart better protection against corrosion to metallic substrates than unmodified paints. In particular, excellent results have been achieved when PTh (polythiophene) derivatives, PPy (polypyrrol) and PAni (polyaniline) are used as anticorrosive additives of epoxy paints. The miscibility of the CP polymer in the paint is a determinant factor for this new technological application of electroactive materials. In order to obtain homogeneous emulsions of paints modified with PTh derivatives, the incorporation of substituents able to facilitate the solubility of the CP in the paint dispersion has been proved to be a very valuable strategy. On the other hand, we have observed that the protection provided by the CP increases with both the electrochemical stability, as well as with the electrical conductivity. Accordingly, these properties enhance the electrochemical protection mechanism provided by the coating. Furthermore, the low concentration of added CP does not perturb to the adherence of the paint, and therefore, both maxima electrochemical and barrier protections can be found within the same formulation. In addition, the environmental stability recently achieved for some CPs significantly increases the lifetime of modified coatings. In summary, although much more systematic investigation is still required, the use of anticorrosive additive based on CPs is one of the most promising topics within coating technology.
