One of the problems faced by an automobile driver at night is the poor visibility of road signs and of road stripes, variously called road delineators, delineating, stripes, pavement markings and roadway markings. Initially, this has called for using bright paints or reflective surfaces capable of reflecting the light of the headlights of oncoming cars. Paints have been developed which are highly reflective. The retro-reflection of light by glass beads injected in road stripes is studied experimentally and theoretically. The complete contribution of the retro-reflected intensity is modelled by taking into account the glass beads and the paint stripes. The efficiency of such a technique is evaluated for various compositions and densities of glass beads injected in paints, including the paint meniscus contributions.
