Increasing efforts are spent for localization based services. However, ranging and localization at a reasonable accuracy without a-priori knowledge about the environment still remains a challenge. This paper proposes a solution to support ranging for real-time outdoor applications, i.e. to provide relative localization for traffic safety applications. It is devised with the goal to design and develop a cooperative system for the prevention of accidents involving vulnerable road users (VRU) in urban and extra-urban areas. As the vehicle moves along a road, sensing systems collect information of the external scenario. Apart from the mere measurement characteristics and the challenges of the sensor fusion process, which were already described in other papers, a number of challenges must be solved on the communication side. A major challenge comes from the medium-access (MAC) layer, which has to support energy-efficient and co-operative communication and ranging using low-cost transceivers.
