A new concept for reactive power compensation in single phase AC railway systems (in particular 25 kV high speed railway systems) is introduced. It is based on a voltage source converter with variable DC link, which allows to optimize performance and passive components rating. The new concept is benchmarked against the standard voltage source inverter (VSI) and the AC chopper, two other potential candidates for reactive power compensation in single phase AC railway systems. Its performance is optimized for high efficiency and reduced load capacitor requirements. A further benefit is the fact that existing VSI units can easily be applied.
