A novel soft-switched multi-phase converter for the 42 V/14 V automotive electrical power system has been built and tested. Switching losses have been reduced using non-linear inductors to provide soft-switching of the active switching devices. The non-linear inductors shape the current waveforms only during commutation. In comparison to resonant converter with non-linear inductors, the load current is not flowing through the non-linear inductors, reducing their size, cost and power losses. The paper outlines the converter analysis and the control of the novel soft-switching technique.
