Nowadays, in the French national railway network, the old 1.5 kV DC system is strongly limited by the voltage drop. In some sectors, it is not possible to increase the traffic or to operate new locomotives at their nominal rating. To increase the capability of the 1.5 kV DC system, without new substation, the authors propose in this paper a new topology based an a feeder transmitting the power with a voltage twice of 1.5 kV and restoring the catenary voltage with DC/DC converters operating as voltage boosters. Negative and positive feeder solutions are discussed. Finally, the design for the DC/DC converter is presented in the case of a positive DC feeder.
