The usage of model vehicles in the domain of autonomous systems and robotics education is continually analysed and discussed in the academic field. Particularly, the approach of using model vehicles has to be defended against several critical objections. Mobile vehicles are said to be not adequate to impart the knowledge of the domain and that it is not apparent to integrate this approach in the field of research and development. The paper mitigates the mentioned arguments and shows that the educational occupation with a model vehicle offers a worthwhile opportunity for the students to deal with robotics relevant topics. The students can also exercise their capabilities of other computer science oriented fields. The play instinct of the students is utilized to increase their enthusiasm for the research field of autonomous systems. Furthermore, the advantages of the usage of model vehicles in the field of research as a realistic test environment for autonomous applications are emphasized. The integration of a model vehicle in education and research is presented in the context of an automatic parking assistance system for trucks with one-axle trailer. Therefore, a more or less informal method was chosen to implement our theoretical concept of parking manoeuvres. The practical feasibility of automatic parking should be approved by driving tests with the model truck.
