This contribution describes the use of lane observation for automotive driver assistance systems for trucks. In a first application, a steering actuator is used for applying both steering torque and steering wheel vibration to warn the driver and to assist him to keep the vehicle in the driveway. By this means, the driver is alerted and simultaneously, the vehicle steering is corrected, both to avoid the dangerous situation to result in an accident. The second application deals with using the lane observation to assist object sensors to refine the environment perception and contribute to a better understanding of the environment by assigning ahead objects to lanes. This refinement can then be used by a number of different applications and is illustrated by the example of collision warning and mitigation. The extended environment perception gives a better understanding of surrounding objects and improved predictions of their movements.
