The fatigue behaviour of welded joints of the wrought magnesium alloy AZ31 (ISO-MgAlZn1) was investigated using fully penetrated butt welds (MIG), partially penetrated butt welds (TIG) and transversal stiffeners (MIG) with a thickness of t = 5.3 mm. The joints were submitted to axial fully reversed (R = -1), pulsating (R = 0) and high mean tensile (R = 0.5) loading. The results were evaluated applying the nominal, structural (hot-spot) and local stress (rf =1.0 and 0.05 mm) concepts. Appertaining FAT-classes were derived according to the IIW Recommendations and compared with the values for welded steel and aluminium joints. It must be noted that the local stresses are principal stresses. As the fatigue behaviour of AZ31 as welded is similar to the behaviour of AZ61(ISO-MgAl6Zn1) which is also considered as a material for structural applications, the values derived are considered to also cover this secondly named material. The results for the magnesium alloy were obtained by testing 5.3 mm thick joints. However, experience with aluminium alloys should allow the data derived to be used for thickness t < 25 mm. The investigations were carried out under constant amplitude loading. As long as knowledge about the variable amplitude loading behaviour of welded magnesium joints is missing, the cumulative damage procedure suggested in the IIW-Recommendations may be applied. But, in the case of critical applications, an experimental proof should be carried out.
