The educational experiment APIS, performed during the Cervantes Mission, focused on the behaviour of a rigid body rotating about its centre of mass in the absence of any torque. The rigid body used in the experiment simulated a rotating spacecraft. The objective was to prepare a video for educational purposes to demonstrate the dynamics of solid body rotation and its dependence on the distribution of mass whiting the body (that is, on the structure of inertia tensor structure). In this article the rigid body dynamics are calculated analytically and compared with the experimental results.
