DNV initiated a project to evaluate the possibilities and limitations of using polymerfilm to replace conventional corrosion coatings and possibly antifouling coatings in shipbuilding. The paper reports on the risk based 'Technology Qualification' process that was employed to define four test cases to be investigated in this project: (i) the application of film on aluminium superstructures, (ii) on steel superstructures, (iii) the application under the waterline and (iv) the repair of existing coating systems. Furthermore requirements for the test cases were defined and possible failure modes were evaluated during this process. Secondly, we will outline the test programme which includes laboratory tests and seawater exposure tests of different materials coated with polymerfilm.
