The purpose of present investigations is a methodology development for the optimal design of large vehicle decks and staircase modules widely applied in ship building industry. Due to large dimension of the numerical problems to be solved, an optimisation methodology is developed employing the method of experimental design and response surface technique. Laser-welded sandwich constructions are modelled and analysed by ANSYS. Two different sandwich panels with I-core and V-core stiffeners are used for the staircase landings working under self-weight load, bending pressure load and concentrated load applied in the centre of sandwich panel. The wheel loaded vehicle deckpresents I-core laser-welded sandwich panel supported by a grillage construction consisting of transverse webs. The sandwich-grillage construction is analysed under wheel loads of 2+3 axes road trailer vehicle and self-weight load with the acceleration factor equals to 1.25. To considerably decrease a dimension of the numerical problem, the I-core laser-welded sandwich panel is changed with the homogeneous orthotropic plate with equivalent properties - stiffness, thickness and density. Optimisation problems are formulated as the minimum weight and cost design subjected to the stiffness and strength constraints.
