As possible new ceramic armor materials, different kinds of composites having potential different energy absorption mechanisms were fabricated and their ballistic performances were qualitatively tested under unconstrained conditions. A 50 vol% dicalcium silicate (2CaO.SiO2, or ''C2S'') - 50 vol% calcium zirconate (CaO.ZrO2, or ''CZ'') composite, a 25 vol% Al2O3 - 25 vol% NiAl2O4 - 25 vol% TiC - 25 vol% ZrO2 quadruplex composite, a similar nano grain-sized, fourphase (quadruplex) composite of the same composition, and a 50 vol% Al2O3 coated - 50 vol% TiB2 platelet composite were fabricated by hot pressing. A multilayer, carbon fiber-reinforced, nanoporous, geopolymer composite of approximate composition (K2O.Al2O3.4SiO2.12H2O) was also fabricated as a possible light-weight armor material. The quadruplex composite hot pressed at 1600 deg C for 1 h at the pressure of 68 MPa in the Ar atmosphere had nearly a full density and possessed hardness, 3-point bend strength and toughness values of 1251 Kg/mm2, 984 MPa and 4.74 MPam1/2, respectively. The results of qualitative ballistic performance testing indicated that the four-phase composite, nano-sized quadruplex composite, and 50 vol% Al2O3 coated - 50 vol% TiB2 platelet composite had ballistic performances comparable to that of standard Al2O3.
