An intelligent ultrasonic inspection device and offline signal-processing software has been developed in order to inspect pipelines in China. The device can move at speed of 150 to 200 mm/s in 190-to 330-mm pipelines. The ultrasonic pig is one of the intelligent ultrasonic inspection device, which includes six parts, such as the driver robot system controller, ultrasonic data processor, power supply, ultrasonic sensor array, and position tracer. The offline software uses multi-sensor data fusion and an export system to analyze the large amount of detected data. The ultrasonic sensors array component is the most important part of the pig, which contains 84 ultrasonic transducers and several environmental sensors. It is basically used to collect information on defects and the working environment. It has been concluded that the ultrasonic inspection devices work well in seawater pipelines and the off-line signal processing, feature extraction, and defect-assessment software is effective and operator-friendly.
