Since 1990's, various kinds of researches have been performed to apply the welding automation in shipyard. Earlier, DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Korea) has successfully applied the 'DANDY' robot system to weld U-type cells in large-assembly blocks. However, there are many remaining fields still needed to be automated in shipyards. In some areas, portable auto carriage is applied, but the workers dislike to use auto carriages to weld the work pieces, especially in sub-assembly blocks, since the types and sizes of the work pieces are various. Moreover, the attaching and detaching of the auto carriage are too difficult in sub-assembly line, and the repetitions and poor environment conditions make the workers tired. Therefore, DSME has developed the Sub-assembly Welding Robot System (SWRS) in order to increase the productivity in welding and to improve harsh and unclean environment in shipbuilding. The SWRS of DSME includes a number of equipment such as four overhanging 6-axis articulated robot manipulators welding the corner edge of joints, a vision system recognising the work pieces automatically, an Off-Line Program (OLP) system using the CAD D/B, and a Central control program integrating an Anti-Collision program. The SWRS was installed in Component Assembly Shop of DSME's OKPO shipyard in August 2005, and ever since then it is performing well on site.
