The very high demands of ship owners concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of operation, servicing, maintenance and repair of ships needs access to comprehensive and well structured ships' life cycle information and data. Today, there are missing a manageable over-all solution for life cycle management of ships. To develop a system which makes available the needed information and data there has been set off a research project called MarLife, funded by the Federal Republic of Germany with some maritime industrial partners, which are ship owners, a shipyard, a system supplier as well as a software company selling maintenance systems. If ship owners already at the beginning of a ship's life cycle invest into a broad documentation of created data and information it is expected that they will be able to reduce their costs for operation, servicing, maintenance and repair extensively. Up to now, there only exist several software solutions supporting the operation of specific ship's systems, e.g. the main engine, crew management or purchasing. The research project of which some main solutions will be presented in this paper aims at implementing and connecting these specialised systems to a life cycle management guidance (LCM) system. By using this system, servicing cycles can be adapted tailored to the ship's needs and maintenance activities can be executed quick and targeted. Further more, damages can be prevented because of the in time replacement of component parts and repairs are executed quicker and cheaper. Three elements determine the design of the life cycle management guidance system. These elements are, firstly, the basic conditions, secondly, the IT solution, and, thirdly, scenarios which have been built up.
