Steel is the most essential material for construction of ships and offshore plants. Currently, in the global steel market, the demand for steel material exceeds the supply. So-called, it is a seller's market. Under these circumstances, assured procurement of steel materials is one of the critical success factors to achieve operation excellence in shipbuilding. In this respect, the authors have tried to build an outstanding supply chain model for steel plates, in cooperation with a steel maker, which adopts the JIT (Just In Time) concept. In this study, an effective supply chain model considering characteristics of the steel maker is proposed through the collaboration between Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Pohang Steel Company (POSCO) using BPM (Business Process Management) methodology. In addition, an integrated plates procurement system based on the extended-ERP system concept is developed using the proposed supply chain model. This system is implemented using the DSME's ERP system which is the first and fully implemented ERP system in the shipbuilding industry and the POSCO's ERP system. Effectiveness of the proposed supply chain model has been verified by applying the integrated plates procurement system to a real plates procurement process between DSME and POSCO, which transfers a large quantity of unstandardised data. With this integrated plates procurement system, DSME expects to reduce the steel inventory by 30 %, to shorten the lead-time for the plates procurement by 20 % and to raise the sigma level of normal delivery significantly.
