The major cause for tool failure in sheet metal forming (SMF) is transfer and accumulation of sheet material on the tool surfaces, generally referred to as galling. The adhered sheet material creates unstable frictional conditions, loss of dimensional tolerances and scratching of the sheet/tool surfaces. The tribosystem in SMF operations is characterised as an open system, where the sheet material surface is continuously renewed while the tool surface remains the same. Therefore, for the investigation of galling resistance, explicitly designed test methods are needed. In the present research, a comparison of worn surface morphologies and wear mechanisms observed for worn deep drawing dies and sheets from the automotive car body manufacturing and worn surfaces obtained by a slideron- flat-surface (SOFS) tribometer has been carried out. Abrasion and adhesion were identified as the main surface damage mechanisms on the investigated dies and sheets. The different stages of the process in SOFS tests were also identified on the damaged sheets from industry, and were differentiated as plastic deformation of the sheet in the early stage of sliding, followed by mild adhesive wear, scratch formation and subsequent transformation into severe adhesive wear. Transfer of sheet material and abrasive scratching were found as the main damage mechanisms of both the tools in SOFS tests and on real forming dies. Comparison ofthe results obtained in laboratory testing using the SOFS tribometer showed that the test method properly simulates the tribological conditions occurring in actual sheet metalforming operations.
