Therefore, this paper proposes a concept for a novel onboard surveillance system, the Surface Movement Awareness & Alerting System (SMAAS), which aims at providing the flight crew with enhanced situational awareness and, where required, alerting. In a first step, the main goal is to prevent ownship from entering, crossing, taking off or landing on runways without a corresponding clearance. In parallel, the crew is provided with traffic awareness and timely alerts if other vehicles or aircraft infringe the protection zone of a runway that is used or has been cleared for own-ship operations. This paper focuses on prerequisites and implications of onboard traffic awareness and alerting functionality in the runway environment.
