APROSYS (Advanced PROtection SYStems) is a European Commission 6th Framework Integrated Project that started in April 2004. The overall objective of the project is to pave the way for the introduction of advanced protection systems for the reduction of the number and severity of injuries to pedestrians and pedal cyclists in all relevant accident scenarios involving cars, MPVs and SUV's. Within the Integrated Project are seven sub-projects, including one concerned with the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (pedestrians and cyclists). This paper outlines the objectives and scope of the pedestrian and cyclist project. Based on primary accident scenarios identified in epidemiology studies, accident information has been collected into a detailed accident database for use in the accident reconstruction activity. The database was analysed. Information of the geometry of the current European vehicle fleet has been collected and grouped according to the EuroNCAP. To complement the geometry corridors vehicle front end contact stiffness corridors for pedestrian impact have been generated. Several programmes of testing samples of laminated windscreen glass have been completed. Based on all the impact tests on the laminated glass, new material models were formulated to represent the fracture/cracking process during impact with the aim to better replicate pedestrian head impacts and the consequent injuries and injury mechanisms. Pedestrian and cyclist impact conditions were investigated.
