A new 1.6 liter diesel engine has been developed and launched to enhance the competitive power of Hyundai/Kia Motors. The new 1.6 liter engine delivers maximum power output of 84.6 kW at 4000 rpm and maximum torque of 255 Nm through wide engine speed ranging from 1900 to 2750 rpm. 2nd generation common rail system with maximum system pressure of 1600 bar was implemented together with variable geometry turbocharger. With the help of optimised compression ratio and refined calibration this engine guarantees excellent starting and combustion quality under cold condition with conventional SRM (self regulated metal) glow plug system. Main features of the engine hardware are outlined: combination of the 2nd generation common rail system and variable geometry turbocharger, EGR cooler controlled by electronic EGR valve, CPF (catalysed particulate filter) system and variable swirl system. Port Design and Combustion Bowl Matching are described. Engine and vehicle performance data are outlined. The NVH optimization process is outlined in detail.
