A low level of noise and vibration is an increasingly important criterion for customer's recognition of the quality of their cars. Beside other components, particular attention is therefore being paid to air condition units regarding their vibration design. To facilitate virtual design assessment in early development phases, BEHR has developed a complete dynamic calculation methodology for air conditioning units under typical excitations, particularly that of the rotating blowers of the unit itself. A crucial point in the physical model approach is the consideration of terms for the gyroscopic motion of the rotating parts. With special solvers the resulting equations can be solved. The method was successful validated using modal correlation and comparison with the operational vibration analysis. A complete dynamic calculation method for air conditioning units was developed at Behr, which facilitates a complete reproduction of the dynamic behaviour of an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) unit during vibration excitations. A crucial point of the physical modelling is the consideration of terms for the gyroscopic motion of the rotating parts. With special solvers the resulting equations can be solved. The method was successful validated using modal correlation and comparison with the operational vibration analysis. The predictive capability of the method is such as to use it for design evaluation in the development process. Beyond the pure analysis, the FE methodology presented here helps in thoroughly understanding the vibration behaviour of HVAC units.
